This summer, I was fortunate to have been part of the NJ branch of the Association of Bridal Consultants' efforts to sponsor a wedding for a bride with breast cancer. Tina & Paul Velez were married on June 26th, surrounded by family and friends. The wedding was made possible by the generous donations of members of the ABC!

During the podcast, I'm interviewed - together with other members of the NJ-ABC - all of whom worked together to fulfill Tina & Paul's wedding dreams. This truly was a very special group effort!

I am so honored to have played a part in making Tina & Paul's day happy. And I'm very happy that the NJ-ABC - vendor members as well as other bridal consultants - were able to create wonderful memories for this deserving couple!

Before & After

When it comes to changing the look of a venue, there are many different avenues you can take. You can bring in floral centerpieces. You can put out different linens, add chair covers. You have many options!

One option that has become more popular of late is lighting. I am a HUGE fan of lighting. You really can change up a room by the addition of uplights! I once did a wedding in a windowless ballroom with ugly chandeliers - we turned off the overhead lights and used a lighting company to make that room absolutely magical! As you can see, the monogrammed gobo on the dance floor also added to the overall impression. Of course, the use of candles everywhere certainly added to the feel!

I recently did an event (not a wedding) in the basement of a church. As you can see, the basement was a typical basement, complete with columns! With the aid of a lighting company, I piped and draped the room and added lights, rental tables & chairs -- and the room was totally transformed! Every 20 minutes or so, the computer-controlled lights changed color, and added the perfect compliment to the exciting mood. So, be creative with your space and SERIOUSLY consider using lighting to add that WOW factor to your upcoming wedding celebration!!

Congratulations to Vivian and Luis!

On May 2nd, Vivian and Luis celebrated their wedding at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Union, followed by their reception at The Manor in West Orange. Even though it was early May, it was a very hot day - but the dance floor was even hotter! With music provided by Diamond Productions, Angel had everyone on the floor all night! What a great time!!

When I think back about Vivian and Luis's wedding, all I remember is the love they share and their family and friends who celebrated with them. Usually, there are "little challenges" that happen throughout a wedding day - and the weather certainly was one of those "little challenges" - but we, at Bride Ideas, did everything we could to make the day run smoothly. And gave the bridal party lots of water!!

The bride's parents are deaf, as were many of the guests, so we had an interpreter sign the major parts of the wedding and reception. What a wonderful way to include everyone on the festivities!!

So, when you're planning your wedding, remember the special touches that personalize your day. Cupcake favors on the way out the door... Interpreters, or bilingual ceremony programs... Special photos taken with far away guests... Meaningful songs to fill the dance floor...

Wedding Podcast Network Asks Me to be a Guest Expert!!

Sorry it's been so long since my last post! I've been so busy with a myriad of things that I just couldn't get to my blog. BUT, I did want to share with you that I recently was asked to be a "guest expert" on the Wedding Podcast Network to discuss what essentially is a dirty little secret of the wedding industry: commissions. I thought about it, worried a bit, and then decided the time was right to shed some light on this practice.

The question essentially had to do with a venue that has a "preferred" vendor list. Now, most venues have this list - which is (usually) paid advertising for the vendors on the list. In this particular case, the venue went one step further - if you, as the bride and groom, choose not to use the vendor on the list, then you had to pay the venue a fee for using someone else! Let me tell you that this venue is NOT in New Jersey.

This practice is pretty slimy, in my opinion. Basically, it appears - and I didn't review any documents and have no first hand knowledge about the deal other than the question posed to me - that when a vendor is selected from this list, it has to pay the venue a certain fee. If the vendor is not selected, then the venue wants its "commission" and gets it from the client (i.e, you!).

I haven't heard about such an outrageous practice in New Jersey, but it is routine here for venues to offer a "preferred vendor list." The vendors on the list provided by the venue, then, are not recommendations for the best vendors for you. They simply represent advertisers willing to pay the fee for the advertisement at that venue. You, as the bride and groom, need to recognize this fact. By contrast, in my role as wedding consultant, I offer you vendor recommendations purely based upon your budget and your style - no kickbacks allowed!

New Wedding Trends Article is UP!

As the Wedding Expert for www.NewJerseyNewsroom.com, I get to write in response to questions I receive as well as my own personal experiences. When I decided to tackle my latest topic, I contacted a few colleagues in the industry to get their opinions, and boy was I overwhelmed! I really hit a nerve.

What topic did I write about, you ask? The title says it all: "Be a Bride, not a Micromanager"

In this article, I give tips about how to select professional vendors and then how to let go! During your planning, you will spend a lot of time choosing your vendors - DJ, photographer, wedding consultant, etc. During this "vetting" process, you need to be comfortable with the level of professionalism of that vendor, as well as his or her personality. After all, you are entrusting them with your wedding!

However, at a certain point, you need to be the bride. Relax and celebrate with your family and friends, and leave the tiny details to your professionals. By all means, communicate your musical selections for the important events during the reception to your DJ - and give him a "do not play" list - but that's it! Do not give your DJ a list of 100 songs that you expect to hear played, in order, during your reception! That is your DJ's job - and he is a trained professional able to read the crowd and get people on the dance floor.

Similarly, do not give your photographer a list a mile long of people and poses that you want taken during your wedding. Your photographer is trained to capture special, UNPLANNED moments - which photos will remain special to you for many years to come. Trust your photographer and let him show you why you selected him!

What to ask when interviewing a wedding planner

So many couples got engaged over the holidays - congratulations!

Now what????

Should your first step be to pick a date, pick a venue, find a priest, get the gown? Seems like everything needs to be done at once! Well, not really.

Your first stop should be choosing a wedding planner. Now, I know what you're thinking - your budget doesn't allow for that "luxury" and you can go online to find all the vendors you'll need. Actually, a wedding planner will help you to afford the wedding of your dreams and also will get you the best vendors for your vision. AND will eliminate most of the wedding stress!

So, now you've decided to find a wedding planner. Once you make your appointments, you need to do some prep work for the initial meetings. Come armed with some questions about the planner's education, experiences, vendor referral policy. Ask about how they work with family members and the bridal party, how much time is included in their package, what timelines they actually prepare for you, how she works with vendors she hadn't recommended. You need to be comfortable that the planner has the experience to do a good job for you AND that you "click" with her. After all, you will be spending a lot of time together!

Once you've hired your planner, together the three of you will conquer the wedding planning world!

"Reality Wedding TV" & What a Wedding Planner Can Do For You

As you may know, I am the Wedding Expert on www.NewJerseyNewsroom.com. In this month's Questions and Answers, I responded to 2 very different questions - one about wedding reality TV and one about wedding planners.

The first question came from Rozlyn and dealt with how "real" is "reality" TV as it relates to the wedding shows, and where to go to get great advice on wedding planning. As we all know, shows aren't put on TV unless there's some sort of drama - whether real or created. So, in response to this question, I recommend that she take a listen to the Wedding Podcast Network. Founded by Robert Allen and his wife Holli, this wide-ranging series of podcasts interview experts as well as "real couples." The information imparted on these podcasts is as real as it gets! Also, Allen is an award-winning videographer so this couple certainly has the expertise to back up their podcasts! Check out their site on iTunes or at www.WeddingPodcastNetwork.com.

The second question came from Brandi. She asked what a wedding planner can do that she couldn't. My answer? She certainly can plan everything on her own, BUT a wedding planner can simplify the whole process. A planner has vetted the multitude of vendors out there, and will recommend the best vendors for suited to specific needs. Also, a planner will be up on the latest trends and be able to offer ideas (at a low cost!) that can enhance her special celebration. Not to mention keeping the dreaded stress at bay!

Musings on this Holiday Season

Hello everyone!

Well, it's already December - time flies by so quickly. Sorry I've been mia for most of November! I had a couple of events, Thanksgiving and nice bout of the flu (which I've now passed along to my husband). Hope you've had a nice lead up to the holidays!

Given the economy, this holiday season is going to be challenging for many folks. And I think that no segment of the population feels it more than those of you who are just getting your engagement rings, and are planning your weddings. However, there is some good news on the horizon, as the economy is showing some signs of revival.

So, if you have just received your engagement ring, CONGRATULATIONS! This is such an exciting time!! Remember who and what is important to you and make sure to center your celebration and planning around those people and ideas.

If you are planning your wedding already, keep up the great work! Try to stay on your schedule so that you enjoy every step of the way. You will always remember the time you spent planning and you want those to be happy memories!

Just imagine: you had a dream wedding and now you're relaxing on some island in the middle of nowhere enjoying your honeymoon. All those months of planning are behind you. No more stress dreams. Your family is all safely back to their home bases, away from you and your new spouse. Life is good.

Now, you're thinking all the wedding "stuff" is behind you, right? Well - not exactly. There are several things that still need to be taken care of after your relaxing honeymoon, such as putting your photo album together, reviewing your edited video and depositing all those gift checks! My guess is these are very happy tasks that won't feel like some of the planning tasks that preceded your wedding. However, there is that 1 pesky item that looms over your heads - writing thank you notes for all those lovely gifts!

Thank you notes don't have to be a burden. Divide them between the two of you, and try to write 5 or 10 a night. And when I say "write" I do mean handwrite, if possible (and legible). You don't have to go into a long dissertation here, but you do have to say thank you for their very generous and thoughtful gift. Also, let you guests know how you intend to use their gifts - if money, perhaps toward a down payment on a house; if fine china, you'll use it during the holidays and think of them. Please don't just take a photo card from your photographer with a preprinted "Thank you" and stick a label on it and mail it out! Remember, you took all that time planning every detail of your day, and your guests came to celebrate with you - this will be their final "touch" from you of your wedding. Make it as personal as your big day!

CAKE!!

There are so many things that I love about weddings. I love to see which gown the bride has chosen. I love to sit in the back of the ceremony (even just for a minute!) and witness the joining of the couple whom I have worked with for so long planning that very event. I love watching the bride dance with her father. I love seeing the room come together before all the guests arrive.

One other thing I love is to see the cake! Before the big day, I usually have a good idea about what the cake will look like, its flavor and shape. But the big reveal of the cake is so much fun! I've worked with clients who had TALL cakes, transformer cakes, cakes that resemble the wedding gowns, round cakes, square cakes - you name it. A cake reflects the couple's personality and theme for the wedding. So, have fun with your cake!

Here in New Jersey, we are coming up on an election for Governor next month. There have been ads galore from the 2 major candidates (and 1 independent) that are just intensifying as the election draws closer. So, in this spirit, I'm putting out the vote to you!

New & Newsworthy in NJ!

Free. Wedding. It's not too often that these two words are put together! But, for Tara Meacham and Rick Clapper this dream phrase became their reality when they won a contest sponsored by the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce (SOC Chamber), NJWedding.com, A.J. Meerwald, ReClam the Bay and the New Jersey Division of Tourism.

On July 25, 2009, the Clappers were married on board the A.J. Meerwald, NJ's official "tall ship" on LBI. Eighty family and friends were on hand to celebrate their nuptials in Beach Haven. The newlyweds are still over the moon about their wedding!

But the excitement isn't over for those of you still planning your wedding. The SOC Chamber is hosting its Second Annual Wedding Road Show on April 18, 2010. Mark your calendars for this date because three couples participating in the Wedding Road Show will be chosen to be on a new television show, which will detail their planning process! Lessons from a recent "graduate"

For the past year and a half, I’ve been working as Rhonda’s assistant, helping to make our clients’ wedding dreams come true. During this time, I’ve also been planning my own wedding and have been learning all the tricks of the trade to make sure my own wedding was perfect. My wedding was on August 14 and it turned out even better than I could have imagined. Now that I’ve had some time to reflect on the day, and have “graduated” from being engaged to being married, Rhonda asked if I would be willing to share some of my experiences. Here are the four most important lessons I learned throughout my planning process.

1. No one is going to be as excited about your wedding as you are. Of course, your friends and family are likely thrilled for you and your fiancé and are excited to help you with the planning. But keep in mind, even the most dedicated loved ones are going to get to the point where they simply can’t talk anymore about the relative benefits of peonies over roses, whether you should have fondant or buttercream icing or if you should invite your boss or not. Remember that your friends and family have other things going in their lives too, and while they are excited and happy for you, they want to be able to talk about what’s going on with them and have the same kind of interactions with you as they did before you got engaged. Make sure to keep up with your friends and family and if need be, schedule “wedding breaks” where you agree not to talk about the wedding while you go out and do something fun.

2. Get good vendors. Your vendors can make or break your wedding day. Make sure you choose people that listen to you, that you enjoy working with and make sure to ask for lots of samples of their work. Do not skimp on vendors and settle for someone you’re not entirely comfortable with. It will make all the difference in the world.

3. Say Thank You. If you’re like me, as you get closer to the wedding, you might find yourself asking for more and more help, and those requests may not always be entirely reasonable (take it from me – they’ll seem reasonable to you at the time, but after you’re married and are able to step back from the craziness, you’ll be amazed at everything your family and friends did for you!). Make sure to thank the people who help you – and really mean it. It sounds obvious, but you might not realize what you’re asking of someone. At least let them know that you really appreciate what they’re doing.

4. Relax! We’ve all seen the movies (or perhaps the episodes of Bridezillas) where the bride is getting ready for her big day and has a panic attack, or starts yelling at her bridesmaids and family for no apparent reason. Don’t feel like this is the norm or what’s expected. YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED!!! HAVE FUN!!! Relax with your closest friends – joke, goof around, munch on your favorite snacks and get excited for what’s to come. Hug, laugh, dance, cry tears of joy and treasure every moment. If you’re able to relax, you’ll be able to take everything in so much more than if you’re stressing about last minute details. I’ve been married for over a month already and I’m still basking in the glow of how amazing my wedding was. Your wedding day is going to go by so quickly and you want to be able to enjoy every minute. Don’t waste time by stressing or freaking out. If something goes wrong, deal with it calmly and with grace. Some things are going to be out of your control but that doesn’t mean it has to ruin your wedding day. Resolve the issue as best you can, ask for help if you need it, and get back to the celebrations! You only get one shot at this so relax and let yourself be surrounded by the love and happiness of your family and friends.

Music Mania

In honor of Bruce Springsteen's birthday today, I started thinking about the music options that my clients are presented with for their weddings. The choice isn't between a DJ or live band anymore!

When you start thinking about entertainment for your wedding, you need to break your event down into three parts: ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Sometimes 1 company will handle all 3 parts of the day - but many times, 3 different entertainers are involved (at least!).

Starting from the beginning, your ceremony. If you are having your wedding ceremony at a church or temple, check with your officiant to see if certain musicians are required, and if others may be added. My couples have had full choirs singing, a string quartet accompany the organ - even trumpets! Remember to check with your venue first to see if there are any restrictions before booking! If you are getting married at a garden or other location, ask if your DJ can play your music, or go with keyboards or a guitar; even a steel drum band on the beach!

Once you are happily husband and wife, the next stage is usually a cocktail hour. Once again, you are not limited to the customary pianist - although, live piano music sets a terrific mood! As the cocktail hour is a time for your guests to mingle and catch up, as well as eat and enjoy a nice drink, you don't want to have a rock band playing which will interfere with this. However, a DJ can play great 1940s music, or what about a jazz band? This is also a great time for younger members of the family to play a special piece for the newlyweds, as playing at the reception may be too overwhelming.

Now you're ready to party! Dance the night away with a live band, or a DJ spinning tunes. Or, how about a hybrid - a DJ with a live bongo player spices things up, and also may allow for guests to show off their drumming skills. A special song written and performed by the groom and his band to the bride make for unforgettable moments. Be creative and enjoy dancing the night away!

What's the proper way to carry a bouquet?

For my Wedding Trends article this week, I answered 2 questions posed by readers. One - how to carry a bouquet. Two - what's the groom's mother's role in planning a wedding. Both are very interesting topics!

For the bouquet, you may want to stand in front of a mirror and just see what looks the best. A typical bouquet will look very nice carried low, at the waist, slightly pointing forward. I guess the best piece of advice I can give is to relax your arms and keep the flowers low, because that's what looks good in photos.

For the groom's mom, that can be much more touchy! If you're the bride, try to involve your fiance's mother in some aspect of the planning, so she feels included. After all, you are marrying her son! While the main focus of the wedding is on the bride and groom, the celebration is a joining of two families - so start off on the right foot!

"Masters of Reception"

Wedding reality shows. They are EVERYWHERE! Bridezillas, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, Platinum Weddings, A Wedding Story, GetMarried - the list is endless. I have to be honest, I used to watch these shows with avid attention. Or was it rabid?! I couldn't get enough of them; I almost considered them to be "research"!

But probably a year ago, I just stopped watching them. Don't get me wrong, if a friend of mine was featured on a show, I'd make a special effort to watch (at least most of the show). I think I felt a bit jaded on the shows, with their "made-up" dramas - or, if they weren't made up, they were just pathetic. And, for the sake of the show, someone always was made out to be the villain. Be it the wedding planner, bride, groom, maid-of-honor or perennial favorite, mother of the bride, someone was cast as the bumbling fool of the show. Or extravagant for extravagant's sake. Whenever I was asked to do one of these shows, I always declined as drama is one of the major things I try to avoid on wedding day!

So, when my friends at Frungillo Catering announced they were the subject of TLC's new wedding reality TV show, "Masters of Reception," I dutifully watched the premiere episode. For some reason, it struck me as being new and fresh! Of course, the Frungillo brothers are the center of the show, but instead of casting a villain in the show, they are the wedding heroes! Again, a bit oversimplified but it's so nice to see a show with truly happy couples versus in-fighting and drama.

Wedding Consultant Amanda's Amazing Wedding!

On Friday, I had the pleasure of attending (as a guest!) Amanda's wedding.

Amanda looked fabulous in her gown and was so happy to be marrying Darren! Everyone in attendance joined in the happy celebration, with a packed dance floor all night. The vendors (mostly ones that have worked with Bride Ideas for years) were top-notch, and the wedding was a smashing success!

One thing that really struck me, as a wedding planner sitting on the guest side, was the sheer beauty of the wedding ceremony itself. There's just something magical about the wedding processional - the anticipation before seeing the bride for the first time. Then, as Amanda walked down the aisle with her parents and a gorgeous smile on her face, everyone in attendance just knew that this couple was meant to be!

Amanda has been working with Bride Ideas for a couple of years now, helping on the day of the celebrations. Starting in October, however, she will be a Wedding Consultant for Bride Ideas, assisting our couples as they plan and prepare for their big day! Look for Amanda's blog entries soon!

11 year anniversary!!

Hi all! I wanted to take this opportunity to share a personal story with you. Just last Sunday, August 9th, my husband Mike and I celebrated our 11th year anniversary. Eleven years since we got married - the time truly flies by!

For our anniversary this year, we decided to go to Emeril's new restaurant in Bethlehem, PA at the new Sands Casino there. It was about a 1 hour, 20 minute easy drive from West Orange. As we have been to Emeril's other restaurants in Orlando and New Orleans, we were very excited to try out his first place in the Northeast. And the food was great! Service was very good as well! We only wished that the "bam" man was there himself, but we had a great time remembering our engagement day, our wedding day and awesome honeymoon travels. Even after 11 years, the memory of our wedding day is fresh and makes us smile as we remember all the fun we had. So, as you are planning your wedding, keep in mind that you truly are "making memories"!

Hi everyone! In today's blog, I'm going to discuss 5 little words that strike fear into many a person's heart: "Would you give a toast?" Now, I know that public speaking ranks right up there with paying taxes and death as the most enjoyable activities on the planet, but how could you refuse a heartfelt request like that? I was just asked to speak about wedding planning before a teachers' group in Central Jersey in October, so I know the panic that sets in before making a presentation, whether long or short.

When preparing to give a toast (or any public speech), here are some tips that I share with my clients:

Practice, practice, practice. This does not mean to write down your toast, word-for-word, but rather spend some time going over the topics you'd like to cover. Then, on 1 index card, write down your topics and recite what you're going to say in front of a mirror. You don't want to sound rehearsed, but you also don't want to stammer and just shout "Cheers!"
Limit your drinks before your toast. There's nothing worse than someone with a mic who is totally wasted, making inappropriate remarks about how gorgeous the groom is (believe me, it's happened!).
Keep it short and sweet. Try to limit your remarks to 3 minutes or so - share a story about you and the couple, talk about how their love has changed them as individuals, and offer a toast to many years. That makes an excellent toast - and eliminates the need for a hook!

Remember, people are interested in what you have to say - so make your short time count!

Choreographed first dances are nothing new. There was even a TV show about them. But this video takes the dance to a whole new level. It certainly reflects the couple's personality! Plus, in these cost-conscious times, it was something that didn't cost anything and yet added a huge WOW (not to mention world-wide attention).

Invited to a wedding!

For the past couple of years now, Amanda Huckabee has been working with Bride Ideas as an assistant on the day of most of the weddings I've coordinated. Amanda has a great sense of humor and a wonderful demeanor when handling the inevitable little "incidents" that occur at a wedding - of which the bride and groom never are aware.

I'm excited to announce that Amanda, starting in October, is going to be a Wedding Consultant for Bride Ideas. She will be taking on her own clients and handling their weddings, using me as a resource of course!

Why wait until October? Well... Amanda is getting married herself in August! So, I've been helping her with her wedding plans for the better part of a year and can't wait to celebrate with her. It's going to be very fun to be a guest at her wedding - I've been getting all excited about what I should wear to her black tie optional event! I guess that I've been planning so many wonderful celebrations for great couples, I needed to be reminded about the fun experience for everyone concerned.

So, take a moment, step out of the planning mode, and simply remember to feel the excitement that your upcoming wedding is generating among your family and friends!!

A View From An Intern

My name is Kate. Last summer I worked with Rhonda as an intern for Bride Ideas. I was able to help her with two different weddings during that time. Each wedding had their own stress points from personalities to working with various vendors. Overall, it was definitely an eye-opening experience because I learned that wedding planning isn't all about cake tasting, dress-fittings, flowers and invitations. There is much more involved, especially if you have your own business.

As a graduating senior from high school, we are required to do a project in May where we work as an intern. I decided to go back to Bride Ideas because I am still really interested in wedding planning and wanted to learn even more about the business. This time around, I worked on two separate celebrations. These celebrations were really rewarding because I was involved with the actual setting up of the venues. Not only did I get to see Rhonda drafting up the timelines in the office, I actually got to see how useful they were when it came to the actual wedding day. I can't imagine not having a planner at a wedding because it is really important to make sure that everything is on schedule so that the wedding runs smoothly.

I also got to see the marketing side of the business which I learned is a huge part of it. No matter how good of a wedding planner you are, it is important to keep finding new ways to get your name out there. Because of the new wave of technology there are so many different wedding websites to put your company's name on that it can be overwhelming.

I have learned a lot from this experience, mainly that wedding planning is anything but glamorous. However, even though it is not glamorous, it is very satisfying when you see the happiness of the newlyweds when they see their carefully decorated venue and their gratefulness for their stress-free day. I have not yet decided if wedding planning is the thing for me, but I have learned that it will be very important to take marketing in college! I want to thank Rhonda for letting me work with her again, I learned so much!

Cupcake Disaster ... AVERTED!

I wanted to share with you the recent tale of two cupcakes. Well, actually, two cupcake deliveries!

My clients' wedding on May 9th was a very intimate and beautiful celebration. Twenty-five people gathered to celebrate with Mireya and Brian well at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City, right on the Hudson River with gorgeous views of Manhattan. The day was running so smoothly, we knew there had to be a snag somewhere...and that's when the cupcakes arrived!

Mireya and Brian had planned for their guests to have dinner and dessert in the Hyatt's private dining room, with windows on all sides overlooking NYC. The dessert centerpiece was to be cupcakes with special red icing roses on their tops on a lovely 3-tiered stand. The cupcakes were to be on display all night - like a wedding cake (in fact, there were 2 cupcakes in the shape of traditional wedding cakes, for the bride and groom).

The bride and groom were taking photos when I got a call from the Hyatt's Banquet Manager, Sandra, to come to the kitchen right away. The cupcakes had arrived -- all "smooshed". They hadn't been properly packed by the bakery and all, except for the two for Mireya and Brian, were unsalvagable! I sent them back and requested a new batch be sent right away. Now, this was 4 pm and the dinner started at 5. I started preparing for the worst, and as Plan B we called around and found a back-up bakery who would be able to have 23 cupcakes ready for us, sans the icing roses. So, we waited, called, and prayed that the cupcakes from the original bakery would arrive on time and in tact!

Luckily, right at 5 pm, the second batch of cupcakes arrived and were totally fine. While the excellent staff at the Hyatt put them out on display, I kept the guests (and the bride and groom!) distracted during the now-extended cocktail hour. At 5:30, just 1/2 hour late, the doors to the dining room opened, the cupcakes were beautifully displayed, and no one was the wiser! Cupcake disaster averted!

Summer intern

I want to introduce you all to Kate, who is going to be Bride Ideas intern over this month. She is a senior in high school, on her way to my alma mater, Bucknell University in the fall. Last summer, she interned with Bride Ideas during the month of July, and she just couldn't help herself - she's back for more!

As wedding season is getting into swing, Kate will have 2 weddings this month to help out with - and also help us prepare for a wedding next month. I'm excited to help Kate explore the wedding industry, to see if this is where she wants to be! I'll ask Kate if she's interested in writing a blog post or two about her experiences!!

Today is Earth Day - a time to reflect and do your part to save our planet. What does that mean for wedding planners? Planning a green wedding, of course!

Here are some "green ideas":

-Instead of flowers, use locally grown produce such as pumpkins, apples, oranges, etc. for decorations

-Use recycled paper for your invitations.

-Go paperless for your invitations - or at least your response cards!

-Choose your honeymoon wisely - think eco-tourism!

-Select your wedding rings made from recycled precious metals and stones.

-Choose a vintage wedding dress.

Planning Your Dream Wedding In This Economy

He finally popped the question, and you said yes! That was in December - now you're in full planning mode. Except the economy has contracted, perhaps one of you has lost your job or is in danger of doing so, and you're trying to figure out how you're going to pay for your dream wedding.

Does this scenario sound familiar? I bet it does to many of you, unfortunately. That's just the reality of the current economy.

My first piece of advice is not to finance your entire wedding on credit cards. Your wedding is the first day of the marriage that will last your lifetime - and who wants to start off being in debt?

My next piece of advice is not to cut back so drastically that you don't even recognize any part of your dream wedding. If you always wanted a live band during your reception, believe it or not there are excellent bands out there that don't charge an arm and a leg! In my market, I know bands that charge in excess of $20,000 and those that charge less than a quarter of that price tag and have an equally packed dance floor. Does your vision always include chair covers? There are other rental options in the marketplace, such as "chair caps" and "chair backs" that will give you much of the same effect at a fraction of the cost. And the best way to control your budget is, as it always has been, to cut your guest list.

My final piece of advice on this topic is to seek out professional assistance. A truly professional wedding consultant will be able to help you reframe your dream wedding so that you achieve the same look and feel, but at a budget that you're comfortable with. We know the industry, know the vendors, and can truly make your day more than you even imagined!

Alternative Centerpiece Ideas

Recently I've been asked about centerpieces that don't revolve around flowers. My clients either are very eco-conscious or were looking for new ways to personalize their wedding celebration. So, to this challenging question, I came up with the following alternatives:

1. Use a potted plant with a decorated container. That way, the winner of the centerpiece can take it home and plant it, or add it to their houseplant collection.

2. Wrap up the favors into different sized boxes and pile them in the center of the table. At an appropriate time during the evening, tell your guests to pick their favor.

3. Do something really unusual - wrap a stuffed animal in beautiful paper and then announce that the centerpieces are being donated to a homeless shelter.

Sandals Royal Bahamian

For most of last week, I escaped the frigid temperatures of NJ for the relatively more balmy ones of the Bahamas! I was invited to go on a "fam trip" to Sandals Royal Bahamian - to visit the resort and experience it first-hand. Please contact me if you are interested in a Sandals honeymoon or vacation, as I can help you decide which resort is perfect for you!

Royal Bahamain is, like every Sandals resort, perfectly manicured. The grounds are beautiful and lush. The resort itself is relatively small, which makes it very easy to navigate. There are 2 main pools and many hot tubs dotted throughout. Also, there's a private island about 5 minutes away by boat that has a restaurant, spa, and great beaches. The restaurants have great a la carte menus and the drinks are all included!

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't all that great. We were mainly in sweatshirts and long pants. I know - you were getting snow, so I can hear the violins from here! It was the weird weather pattern that was affecting Miami that blew over to the island. Oh well!

Here are a couple of photos of the Royal Bahamian (I was the photographer, not the photographee!). The first one is of the resort from the private island, and the second is my friend and fellow wedding planner, Anna Weaver, on the pier back from the private island.

Services & Fees

I just did something a bit radical in the wedding industry. Not many wedding consultants have done this, but for many reasons I felt I needed to do it. Mary Dann, a celebrity wedding planner in California with whom I met during the annual Association of Bridal Consultants conference, encouraged me to join her. So, now I went ahead and posted my Services and Fees on my website!

Why do something a bit outside the box? First, I thought it would provide some information to newly engaged couples like yourself as to the range of pricing for wedding consultants in the northern NJ area. There are so many TV programs that show how wedding planners help a couple throughout the planning process, and probably many of you think that because it's on TV that you cannot afford much needed help. By listing my services and fees, I wanted to take the mystery out of this process.

Second, I wanted to show you how many valuable services a wedding planner provides. As a newly engaged couple, you may not realize how much is involved in planning a wedding - as many as 120 decisions are made during the course of your engagement!

Third, when I started Bride Ideas back in 2002, I made the decision to charge a flat fee depending upon the services my clients needed, and not upon whether the reception is at The Pleasantdale Chateau, Stirling Ridge or The Bethwood. I also do not charge my vendors to be recommended by me, or take a commission from them when my recommendation is hired. In fact, I ask that if a commission is offered, that it be given to my client as a "Bride Ideas' discount." That's my philosophy.

Please know that I am not trying to make a "commodity" out of wedding consulting services. There is a range of pricing on Bride Ideas' site, as the exact amount can only be determined after we have an initial meeting and all of the details are discussed. Of course, custom packages are often created based upon your individual needs! I am here to help guide couples on their way down the aisle, and felt it was time that I lifted the veil, so to speak, on Bride Ideas' services and fees. I hope it helps!

New Year's Resolutions

Well, it's that time of year again. Or, more accurately, five days ago was "that time of year again." The time when we look back on 2008, assess what we did right and not so right, and resolve to make changes in 2009.

For many of you, 2008 brought new changes - perhaps an engagement! 2009 will be a year of planning and celebrating that decision. I hope your new year's resolution is to remember that a wedding is a happy occasion, a time for your family and friends to come together and share in your joy and happiness. Try to remember the reason for all the planning that is to come, and not get bogged down in all the details!

For me, one of my new year's resolutions is a bit more mundane: to get and KEEP my office organized. For those of you who have been to my office, you probably didn't notice the huge pile of papers hidden in the back closet - only to return to my desk as soon as you left! I want to figure out a way to organize my office so it is a more stress-free place to create wonderful weddings!

Attitude of Gratitude

I've been hearing that phrase a lot lately - "attitude of gratitude." At first, I have to admit that I just scoffed at it, thinking it was a hollow string of rhyming words. However, I have come to embrace the meaning of the phrase, and wanted to share with you some of the things I'm grateful for over the past year:

I'm grateful for my clients who trusted in my guidance for decor and vendors, and had absolutely beautiful celebrations.

I'm grateful for my clients who challenged me to become a much better communicator.

I'm grateful for the Association of Bridal Consultants, which provides me with education and networking opportunities.

I'm grateful for the wedding professionals with whom I've worked, who enhanced my clients weddings by going above and beyond.

I'm grateful for all the new vendors that I've met but not yet had a chance to work with, because they show me alternative ways of reaching a client's dreams.

I'm grateful for all the emails and cards from my clients, sharing their growing families.

I'm grateful for everyone who reaches out to me for my professional guidance, as it truly is my honor to be asked to share in your most important day.

Personally, I'm grateful for my loving husband, playful cats, supportive family and understanding friends, who constantly remind me that my most valuable possession is them!

The Holidays are UPON us!

I just got finished going through my calendar and adding in all the holiday parties we've been invited to. Whew! Seems like there won't be any time to decorate, bake, shop for gifts - let alone actually get work done! And I have a sneaking suspicion that you have the same problem.

I know that we are all busy. Believe me, as a wedding consultant, I totally understand about crazy schedules! All of my clients have so many demands on their time and I am continually working around their requirements and coordinating with vendors' appointments. No easy task! Add in holiday merriment, and getting anything done can be quite an achievement!

So, during this time of year, whether you've been engaged for months or just received the ring, take time away from planning and enjoy being with your family. Create cherished moments! Get inspired! Try not to make wedding planning just another thing you have on your "to do" list.

Following a theme - Celebration Studios

Hi all,

I got an amazing response after my last blog post about Calvary Bridal House. I do want to let you know that tomorrow - December 2nd - is the "bar date," or the deadline to submit your proof of claim forms to the court. If you are owed money from Calvary Bridal House, please get your claim form in!! Also, according to court documents, the bankruptcy case for Calvary Bridal House recently was converted from a chapter 11 to a chapter 7, which means the shop is being liquidated and will no longer be operating.

A similar case in the NJ area that affected nearly 4000 couples was that of Celebration Studios. Photographers and videographers subcontracted by Celebration Studios had taken photos/video of all these weddings and then the company went out of business overnight. Here is the good news: you can now pick up your pictures and video!! I don't know the status of them, though - my guess is they are unedited - but, as long as you get the raw data, you'll be able to put them into your preferred format! Calvary Bridal House in Millburn

Sorry I've been MIA for a bit... From November 7-12, I was in Newport Beach, CA, attending the Association of Bridal Consultants' annual conference. This was my 7th straight year attending conference, and once again, it did not disappoint! I was able to reconnect with old friends from across the globe, meet new and exciting people working in the wedding industry, and learn a great deal from the educational seminars! Colin Cowie was this year's featured speaker, and he brought amazing photos of weddings he's done and graciously posed for many photos! In my next post, I'll publish some of the photos that I took in CA!

However, I wanted to point out an issue that's been going on in NJ - the bankruptcy filing of Calvary Bridal House in Millburn. According to reports, the bridal salon took bride's deposits and orders and simply pocketed the money without submitting the orders to the designers! There's a pretty good article about this in the NJ Star Ledger: http://www.nj.com/independentpress/index.ssf/2008/11/calvary_bridal_leaves_town.html. Apparently, the shop has now relocated to Livingston.

Now, in a former life, I was a bankruptcy attorney. Essentially what will happen is all the brides who purchased gowns - or put money down for dresses but never received them - will be deemed "unsecured creditors." They will be required to file a Claim and will be processed amongst all the other creditors to Calvary Bridal House. The Bankruptcy Court essentially will look at all the money available to pay Calvary's bills, and divide that money up among the creditors. In cases I worked on, unsecured creditors received anywhere from 2 cents on the dollar all the way up to over 90 cents, all depending on a multitude of factors. I can't help but feel really badly for anyone who bought their dress from Calvary, as you will more than likely have to go to another shop for your dress and wait until the bankruptcy is finished before receiving a portion of your deposit back.

Calvary Bridal House isn't the only wedding business to file for bankruptcy and/or disappear lately. Celebration Studios comes to mind, and just a night or two ago I heard of another photography studio in Staten Island closing up without warning. The lesson for you is to check out - as much as you can - how well established the company is, check with the Better Business Bureau, etc. One thing you can do for yourself, though, is to hire a professional wedding consultant who knows the local industry and reliable companies. Sometimes we hear rumblings about companies before they become known to the public; other times, we can steer you to professional vendors who more than likely will provide you with service that exceeds your expectations.

62 years

In my last post, I was just leaving for Phoenix to attend a wedding industry conference, and promised to tell you all about it when I got home. Unfortunately, I was derailed from doing that because my grandfather passed away suddenly and I'm only now getting back on track. So, I want to devote this post to my grandfather, and I promise to get back to you with the Phoenix update next time!

My grandfather was 91 when he passed away, and his mind was still sharp as a tack even though his body was getting frail. He and my grandmother (who just turned 90) were married for 62 years! In growing up with them and watching them even when I moved out of the house, I picked up a few pieces of wisdom about marriage that I'd like to pass along.

First, keep your sense of humor...laughter really is the best medicine

Second, maintain communication...be honest and open with each other

Third, feed your own interests...you'll be a happier and more well-rounded partner

Fourth, discuss money and plan for the future...so you'll be able to enjoy your retirement comfortably

Finally, always remember to say "I love you!"

I will miss my grandfather's very dry wit and support of everything I do, but am so happy that I had the blessing of him in my life for as long as I did. He was many things to many different people, but to me, he's simply "grandpa."

Green Weddings

Today, the big trend is toward "green weddings." If you pick up a bridal magazine or go to any wedding website, you're bound to see an article about how to make your wedding "green." So, what does this really mean?

There are many ways in which to make your big day more eco-friendly. Consider having your invitations and all related wedding paper (your menus, programs, escort cards) printed on recycled paper. Or, you can take it to the extreme and email your wedding invitations - or at least have the rsvp's go to a website. This way, you'll save on both the paper and the transportation costs for the respond envelope to be mailed back to you.

Other ideas that can make your wedding "greener" are to ask the florist if they will compost the leftover flowers. Request that your caterer cook with locally grown produce. There is even a company that will take all of the leftovers from your event and donate it for you to local homeless shelters. (Make sure to check with your reception site to make sure of any restrictions they may have, based upon liability/insurance requirements.)

I hope this post starts your mind thinking of ways to make a huge impact on your guests for your wedding, while limiting the impact to the earth!

Moved in!

Well, it's hard to believe that we've been in our new place for over a week now! I'm finally getting rid of some of the astounding number of boxes, and some rooms even look livable!! It actually was nice re-setting up my office here, and culling some of the items while adding others to the display. Of course, there's still nothing on the walls and plenty more boxes to go around...

As we've been suffering this move, I've been contemplating why I kept so many things for so long. Some of it was photos and notes from growing up, which made me smile to look at again. But then there was chipped pottery, waaaay too many tubes of toothpaste(!), lampshades from lamps that we no longer have, and the list goes on. Why? I guess it was part of my pack-rat sentimentality, as well as the "you don't know when you can use this again" thought process. I hope I've learned my lesson - if you're not using it, either donate it or throw it away! Hope this piece of advice helps you as well!!

What a wonderful wedding!

I'm in the middle of packing and finalizing all the details for our move on Friday, but wanted to quickly write about the wonderful wedding I coordinated on Saturday. Asa and Alison were just the most lovely people, and their wedding was filled with special touches, which made their day so meaningful for everyone in attendance.

Alison and Asa really incorporated their heritage into the ceremony and reception. They spent their time, and had their MC, thank everyone for coming from far and wide (including many, many other countries). It was the special details that made everyone feel so welcome and happy to be a part of their unique celebration.

One moment stands out in my memory, which is when Asa's father made his toast. He gave Asa a list of 13 tips to make his marriage the most important facet of his life. Then, he blessed Asa (they are from Uganda) -- it was absolutely so heartfelt and moving.

So, when planning your wedding, don't overlook the small touches. While the color of the flowers, your decor and the menu all contribute to making your day memorable, when it really comes down to it, it's your family and friends that make all the difference!

"I Just Can't Wait For This To Be OVER!!"

I have to tell you, every time I hear this phrase, I cringe. I feel so sorry for the couple getting married because they are saying that they are just so sick and tired of planning that they seem not to even want the wedding they've been planning. How sad!

The truth is, planning a wedding is nerve-wracking, stressful, worrisome, annoying, frustrating, expensive... Yes, all of these words can be applied to the planning process IF YOU LET THEM. Sometimes it's a well-meaning relative's unsolicited advice that gets under your skin. Other times, your vendor is impossible to reach. Maybe you're not sure of what you want for the bridesmaids' dresses and everyone of them is offering a differing opinion. When you feel like your head is going to spin around like Linda Blair in the Exorcist - STOP. Try to remind yourself that everyone truly has your best interests at heart, and are good intentioned. Everyone just has their own idea of how a wedding "should be" but, truly, only you and your fiance have to be happy with your decisions.

Here's a tip: When you are about 1 month or less away from your wedding, try to get all of your details down on paper (if you're not working with a wedding consultant who is doing this thinking for you). Set a goal to have everything that can be done ahead of time completed no later than one week before your wedding. That way, the week of your wedding, you'll be in "execution mode" - getting your mani/pedi/massage, going to your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, etc., and won't be still trying to "get things done."

Even if you've been engaged for 2 years, you should be excited to be sharing all of your hard work and planning with your friends and family. The dread and exhaustion I hear on TV or from some couples could be turned around. How about trying "I'm so happy the planning phase is over, and now I get to celebrate with my closest family and friends!" Just change the words and you'll be amazed at all of the positive feelings they evoke!

Honaty & Gaddy celebrate in style

I met Honaty and Gaddy about 6 months ago, when they came to me with little more than a church, reception venue, photographer and videographer. They had some ideas of how they wanted their wedding to be, but not a concrete vision. But, they were open to my suggestions, and we spent the first half of the year creating and defining exactly how they wanted their wedding to be remembered.

Because most of the guests spoke Spanish, the wedding ceremony was conducted in Spanish, and the DJ spoke both Spanish and English throughout the reception. They chose the Richfield Regency, a lovely venue in Verona, to celebrate with their family and friends - and what a celebration it was!

Honaty (and Gaddy too!) chose a purply-pink color as a dominant theme, and the rented linens and all of the paper reflected that choice. The invitations, escort cards, menus and table numbers were all created by Allison of the Satin Bow, and featured a rhinestone buckle. Their attention to detail really made the reception look beautiful!! Don't take my word for it, though, check out this photo of the table setting. I have to admit, though, the linen color did not come out in the photo true to life (sorry, my camera skills don't compare to a professional!).

Honaty & Gaddy really are a wonderful couple. It was my pleasure and honor to have been a part of their fabulous celebration!

Lindsey & Jonathan celebrate at the Valley Regency

On May 10th, Lindsey & Jonathan were married at the Valley Regency in Clifton. It was a lovely ceremony and a GREAT party. I swear, the newlyweds were on the dance floor all night!!

Here is one of the first photos of the newly married couple. Lindsey was wearing a designer dress, and the designer was actually in attendance! She was in tears seeing how beautiful Lindsey looked in the gorgeous dress!! This moment is the reason I do what I do...

Their wedding had a gold theme, which was carried out spectacularly in the ballroom, with rented linens and these amazing centerpieces! As you can see, votives hung from the centerpieces with gold ribbon, and the vases were filled with banana leaves. When the lights were dimmed, the room had a glow that was breathtaking.

As the evening came to a close, Lindsey & Jonathan had a kiss bar -- all different candy containers filled with hugs and kisses. They even had framed photos of themselves, hugging and kissing! Each guest was given a bag to fill up, with the sign "Hugs & Kisses from the new Mr. & Mrs." You'd be amazed at how full the bags are when the guests leave (especially the older ones!)!

I hope these photos and brief details of a lovely wedding inspire you!

Wedding Ceremony in the garden

On May 2nd, I had the pleasure of attending the wedding ceremony for one of my clients. It's a very long story, but they chose to get married now, and then have a formal church wedding and reception at a later date. So, I actually was able to be present at their ceremony instead of my normal mode of worrying about the next several steps ahead and making sure everything was on track!

Being there, in their moment, reminded me of exactly why I became a wedding planner. I simply adore weddings! The love shared between the couple is so tangible - it spreads to all the guests and fills everyone with hope. Sure, there will be bumps in the road, but remembering all of the love shared on your wedding day will help you weather whatever lays ahead.

Vivian & Luis looked so beautiful on their wedding day, and the gazebo and gardens were just so lovely! For my very first picture on my blog, I wanted to share with you the first few moments after they were married:

Take time

This week, I want to write about something that is totally essential to planning your wedding. In fact, it may be one of the most important things that you do during your engagement! Take a break!

That's right, I mean STOP planning every last detail of your wedding for at least a weekend! Go away somewhere with your fiance, or with your girlfriends. Cease obsessing over which way the pocketfold in your invitation should face, and step away from the wedding planning bubble!

I think I just coined a new phrase -- "wedding planning bubble." I now claim the copyright to that term! How apt?! Perhaps more so for some couples than others, but everyone gets caught up in the bubble. Which is totally fine! But, sometimes you need to get out of the bubble and experience things that don't directly relate to your color scheme or favor choices. Re-enter the world outside of your wedding plans, and re-connect with your friends on a totally different plane.

When you return from your weekend "outside the bubble" guess what? All of your choices still will be waiting for you - and you'll be better able to make the right decision for you, simply because you are refreshed. So, take some time and get away!!

Wedding Day Timeline

On the day of your wedding, how do you know what needs to be done at what time -- or plan for all of the little details? The answer: a wedding day timeline!

As your wedding planner, about 1 month before your big day, I create a timeline that shows who needs to be where doing what, when. I create this by reviewing all of your vendor contracts, and putting in the times they are supposed to arrive, set-up, etc. It is filled in with the traditions you want to observe, such as the tossing of the bouquet, parent dances, etc. When we meet to go over it, we make sure everything is set out exactly the way you want your day to go. Then, I create individual timelines for each vendor, which I send to them the week before your wedding.

While not the most glamorous part of wedding planning, the wedding day timeline is probably the single most important document needed to ensure your wedding day runs smoothly. While there are times put in, the times become more of an order of events during the reception - but they are strictly adhered to in preparing for your ceremony! I put all the little details into the timeline (if your fiance is allergic to nuts, I make a note of that so that the caterer doesn't give him any toasted almonds on his vegies!) in order to eliminate the need to interrupt you during your celebration to ask a question. Plan ahead so you don't have to worry on your big day!

Your invitations

One of the fun things to do when planning your wedding is selecting your wedding invitations. This allows you to be creative with the physical papers used, and to bring in your theme. As your invitation is the first introduction to your wedding that your guests will physically receive, you need to make this selection with care.

The first thing to think about is style. Are you looking for a more traditional look - think cream cards? Is your theme contemporary - how about a pocketfold? Do you want to stress a black tie theme - send the invitation in a black pocket with a white bow. Or, are you having a formal and extravagent event - how about sending your invitation in a boxed presentation?

After you come up with your invitation's style, the next step is to select colors for the papers used and the ink. If you are working with a custom invitation company, there may be literally hundreds of choices for you! Hint: keep with your color scheme to tie the invitations to your wedding.

The next step is wording. There are tons of websites out there that can give you suggestions for your wording. If you're working with a wedding consultant (which you should be!), then she or he can offer you suggestions. There are few hard and fast rules in today's society about wording, but a great resource is Emily Post.

Finally, you'll want to select the font for your printing, which you can use in both the invitation and envelope(s). Once again, there are millions of choices out there, but go with something that's easy to read and goes with your style.

A new life together

Right now, as I write this post, my husband and I are in the middle of preparing to put our house on the market. We are now undertaking the most difficult process -- clearing out the clutter and straightening up the closets!

You, as an engaged couple, are about to start your new life together. Some of you may be living together already in the home you will share as a married couple. Others will be moving in together once you say "I do!" Either way, you should step back from wedding planning and make sure you are both ready to purge your old baggage and begin a new slate.

Believe me, I was filled with trepidation before conquering (or at least starting!) the "junk room." Over the past 8 years that we have lived in this house, there always was this one room that just ended up being the place where things ended up. And this room was in shambles! It took one weekend, at least 3 huge garbage bags, 1 huge recycling bin and a lot of patience to go through and get rid of the stuff that we didn't need/want. "Why did I keep that?" Funny to see what you felt was important at one time in your life - turns out to be trash later! But at the end of the weekend, how amazing was it to walk into the "junk room" and see its true beauty!

Before you get married, take a bit of time to get rid of the old stuff - be it literally or figuratively. Cleanse your house, and get ready to enjoy the endless possibilities!

Buff Brides

With all of the planning that you're doing for your perfect day -- trying on numerous wedding gowns, doing hair and make-up trials, selecting your jewelry, getting your teeth whitened -- one area to remember is to work out and tone up! After all, you want your body to be in the best shape possible, and you'll have the photos to prove it!

There are so many ways to get in shape available. Think about how you like to work out - are you a gym person, or do you like to work up a sweat in the privacy of your own home? Do you want a personal trainer that comes to your house? Do you have free weights in your basement next to the treadmill, gathering dust? Or, do you like DVDs?

Another consideration is what is your goal? Are you looking to lose weight overall, or tone up your arms only? If you want buff upper arms, jogging around your neighborhood with your dog may not be the best option.

Also, think outside the box! I started doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu about 1 1/2 years ago and, without changing my diet, lost 20 lbs. Not to mention gained a lot of confidence and cardio health!

Honeymoons

My favorite topic! I love to travel, and have been lucky enough to have seen many parts of this beautiful world, so I enjoy assisting my clients in selecting their honeymoon destinations.

There are so many places to choose, it's almost overwhelming at the beginning. When working with a client, I start with how they like to relax. Do they go hiking, skiing and scuba diving, OR do they go to the beach? In other words, are they active or more laid back? Another question I ask is whether they want to go sightseeing on their honeymoon, or want to go to a resort where everything is included and they don't have to leave the property. Also, do they want to stay within the US, or travel abroad?

Based upon their responses and budget, I make recommendations for places for them to consider. Beach bum? Think Mexico, the Caribbean or Hawaii. Sightseers -- Europe or South America. Adventurists, how about an African Safari? Resort-lovers should look at Sandals or even a cruise. Exotic locale? Try Bora Bora (where I spent my honeymoon), Australia or Asia.

Once we zero in on a location, I usually recommend a travel agent to help them with their booking. While online booking engines certainly can be expedient, I've found that, especially with a honeymoon, getting that personal touch with insider knowledge really enhances the experience! After all, your wedding day is filled with professionals - shouldn't your honeymoon be as well?

How much do you charge for a wedding?

I get this question at least once per week: "How much is a wedding?" Well, where do I begin???

The answer to this question is very complex, because every couple is looking for different assistance from a wedding consultant. I can do as little or as much as you need -- from simply creating an "engagement blueprint" (a monthly to do list and budget) to attending every single meeting with your vendors. I offer my clients a wide variety of options to fit their needs - both emotional and budgetary.

So, the better question to ask a prospective wedding consultant is not "How much for a wedding?" but rather "How can you help us achieve our wedding vision?" When interviewing wedding planners, focus on three things: how well you "connect" with the planner, what types of services the planner is offering and the planner's qualifications. It's very important that you and your planner get along well because he or she will be working very closely with you over the next months, and you'll need to be excited to be working together! As for the services being offered - if you want a filet mignon sauteed in garlic, you don't head to McDonald's, right? The same way, make sure the services being offered are customized to your exact needs, including your budget! Also, you want to hire a consultant who has been through training and is a professional in the industry - after all you are entrusting your most important day to this person!

Budgeting basics

I've been meeting with a lot of newly engaged couples lately, and their biggest concern is their budget. How much should they be putting aside in total for their wedding? How much should every vendor charge? These are valid questions, and very real concerns!

I think the average US wedding costs around $28,000. However, I know that the average northern NJ weddings costs around $40,000. That's for about 100 guests! That IS a lot of money!

To be honest, I've worked with budgets from $20,000 to $150,000 -- and every couple has to really identify the most important aspects of their wedding and allocate their dollars accordingly. Even the highest budgets will choose less expensive alternatives to stay within their monetary framework!

The first thing to keep in mind is to NOT, I repeat NOT, spend more than 50% of your budget on the reception. And when I say 50%, that INCLUDES taxes, service charges, gratuities! If your budget is $50,000, then you have $25,000 TOTAL to spend at your reception venue. And if you have 200 people attending your wedding, that breaks down to $125/person, inclusive. So, when you're going to look at places, I recommend looking at those places that charge $100/person, just so you know you'll be at or below the $125/person mark when all the "extra charges" (tax, tip, service charges) are added in.

Once you've allocated 50% for your venue, place dollar figures for the rest of your vendors. Then, when you go and meet with vendors, stick to your line items! Of course, if you go over or under in one category, you must adjust your budget accordingly down the line. Hope this advice helps!

What is a wedding coordinator and why do I need one?

The title of this post is a common question that I am continually get asked. What does a wedding consultant do? Why do I need one? The short answers are: (1) anything and everything related to a wedding; and (2) because you don't want to be directing vendors on your wedding day. But, there's a lot more to it than that.

First, a wedding consultant, or a wedding coordinator, or a wedding planner (there are numerous names that we use in the industry, but -- essentially -- all hats provide the same service) is, basically, your wedding's project manager. She (or he) will keep you on track about when to book the vendors and how each vendor fits into your overall budget. She will make recommendations for the best vendors at your price-point. She will run interference with well-meaning but perhaps overzealous friends and family. As your wedding draws closer, she will prepare a wedding day timeline, coordinate with all of your vendors, attend your rehearsal and oversee all aspects of your wedding day. Obviously, I'm just giving a very broad overview of what I do! Consider this: most people wouldn't think of doing their taxes on their own, so why wouldn't you hire a professional wedding consultant to ensure your wedding day runs perfectly?

Second, you do need a professional wedding consultant to point out potential pitfalls, steer clear of less-than-quality vendors, educate you on etiquette issues and work behind-the-scenes for you on your wedding day. You can hire most wedding consultants to come in for the final month before your wedding to tie up all the loose ends and be the go-to person on your wedding day. So why not take advantage of what a professional can offer you?!

Reception venues - where to start?

One of the first things on your wedding planning agenda (after you hire a wedding consultant!) is to find the perfect place to celebrate your wedding. Every couple has their ideal venue in mind -- some based upon price, others upon location, style, decor, food, etc. There's a facility out there for everyone!

Here in NJ, we have all sorts of venues. Traditional ones like banquet halls and hotels, more unique locations such as mansions and museums, we have them all! Your first step should be to check out their websites. While not all websites are created equal, they at least give you a flavor of the facility. Once you've selected some facilities to visit in person, give the banquet manager a call to confirm that your date is available and to set up an appointment. Don't just show up and expect someone to show you around!

When you walk through the doors, take in all of the atmosphere, ambiance, decor, etc. Remember, this is exactly how your guests will be introduced to your wedding reception! Make sure you see all of the facility that will be used by you and your guests, just to get a proper feel for the place.

After visiting a few facilities, I'm sure one will become the gold standard, upon which all others are judged. When that happens, you know you've made your decision!

Watched the ball drop last night from Times Square -- what a great sight! I actually went to a ball drop many years ago, pre-9/11 and all of the new restrictions. My friends and I were having dinner uptown NYC and finished around 11:3o. We decided to jump in a cab and go down to Times Square. We ended up somewhere near to the ball drop, and saw it go down and usher in a new year, after being outside for only 10 minutes or so! Right after, we jumped in another cab and returned to a friend's apartment on the Upper West Side. It was so much fun!!!

Choosing the Perfect Date

Since I'm assuming that you're reading this blog because you are engaged, the title of this week's post is referring to when you're going to get married - not to whom!

For some couples, choosing when to have their wedding is easy. Some couples have a special anniversary that they want to cement. Others know that their school or work schedules will only allow for a certain period of time in which to celebrate.

For others, selecting a date can be more difficult. I try to help them narrow down the choices by asking questions about their preferences -- Do they absolutely hate the heat? Then, the summer months are out. Do they have guests travelling to their wedding via airplane? Then, skip the winter when the weather can be more iffy.

Sometimes, we will go to various venues and if the couple falls in love with one of them, they will ask the venue's availability and select from those dates. Or, they may be members of a church and ask when the priest has openings to perform the wedding. Couples also may choose their date based upon "how" the date sounds -- 7/7/07 was a very popular wedding date!

Just remember, no matter which date you choose, you will always remember it!

'Tis the time to ... Get Engaged!

Congratulations!! The "engagement season" is in full swing -- more engagements happen between Thanksgiving and New Year's than any other time during the year. I, myself, got engaged on December 13th many moons ago!

So, now you've already said "Yes!!" to your fiance (get used to that term!), received a ring, and told your family and friends the great news. You're basking in the newly-engaged euphoria. And you should! This is a great time for you and your honey -- treasure it!

Because, soon enough, you will get the inevitable questions: "So, when's the date?" "Where are you having your reception?" And many other like questions offered by well-meaning family members and close friends. Just remember, your family and friends want to help you down the path to wedded bliss, even if their questions just bring you agita!

My recommendation to you is to do a few things. When you're ready to begin the planning process, you should first think about how many guests you want to invite to share in your day. Next, you should come up with an overall budget for your wedding, including money to be received from all sources including contributed by you and your fiance. Armed with these 2 pieces of information, you should contact a wedding planner and take it from there. S/he will help you define your style and theme, and help you locate the perfect venue(s) for your celebration.

Association of Bridal Consultants conference

Just a few short weeks ago, I attended my 6th annual Association of Bridal Consultants' conference which was held in Orlando. Every year since becoming a wedding planner, I have attended conference -- to meet other planners worldwide, to get up to date with the trends, to learn more about the industry and to interact with new vendors on the corporate level. This year, with over 500 attendees, the conference was even more exciting and informative than ever!

Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving weekend is almost over. In our house, that means that the turkey leftovers have been devoured, there's some leftover vegies, and we have a lot of house to clean. For Thanksgiving, we had both my husband's and my whole family over - 13 adults, 3 kids under age 10, and 1 baby. That meant a lot of coordination to get hot food on the table at the same time!

I was very thankful that I was able to share the holiday with my grandparents and my sister-in-law's infant, and the generations in between. After all, family is what makes life worth living - and so interesting. Also, I was extremely grateful that all of the courses made it to the table hot and delicious. I was happy that we were able to invite close friends to the table as well - not relatives by blood, but family nonetheless.

Now, believe me, I do NOT live in a Norman Rockwell painting. My family has interpersonal relationship issues that rival the best of them. But I choose not to dwell on the bad things, but rather to change what I can to improve the situation for everyone. I have found that it's my attitude that affects my mood - and the atmosphere around me, so I choose to see the best in the situation and try to make others see it from a happier perspective as well. My family is not perfect, but I'm grateful that we were able to be together, even just for one day.

My gratitude extends beyond the holiday, however. I am so grateful that I decided to leave law firm life and start Bride Ideas and now I have the privilege of helping young couples as they begin their lives together. I adore putting weddings together -- all of the planning, decisions, creativity -- it certainly can be stressful, but it is so rewarding to me. When I see a newly married couple smiling and enjoying being with their family and friends, without having to deal with the details, I know that I have chosen the right way to help others.

Time: The Great Equalizer

I recently heard or read somewhere that the only constant for every single person on earth is time. No matter how rich or poor you are, tall or short, fat or skinny, the one thing that we all have in common is that there are only 24 hours in the day. It's how we choose to use those precious 24 hours that sets each one of us apart.

Now, before you were engaged, you probably had a routine. Get up for work or school, go to work or school, do homework, eat dinner, meet up with friends, go to sleep. Whatever your routine, you managed to fill up your time pretty full, I would imagine.

However, then came the ring and the life-changing question. All of a sudden, your full routine has been turned on its head. It has been estimated that it takes about 180 hours to plan a wedding on your own. That equals, roughly, adding in another month to plan your wedding -- over and above your other obligations!

Some people relish doing this - giving up their free time to research vendors. Others choose to hire wedding consultants, such as myself, to help alleviate the time crunch that comes with planning a wedding. No matter how you try, you simply cannot create more hours in a day, so you may want to consider hiring a professional to give you back life's most precious resource.

Corn Maze

Now that autumn has finally arrived, I've been out and about enjoying fall activities. I just returned from an event at a corn maze. No, it wasn't a wedding - but it certainly was fun and challenging!

What does a corn maze have to do with wedding planning, you ask? Actually, there are some similarities! At the beginning, everyone is very excited to enter - then as you go through it, you get confused and lost - shortcuts can lead you down unexpected and unwanted paths - then you finally find your way to the end - and when you get out, you want to do it all over again!

The best way to get through the maze of wedding planning is to have a plan. I work with my clients to create an engagement timeline, a plan of what tasks need to be accomplished every month. This plan allows everyone to be on the same page, and avoids taking a "wrong turn." There is no need to burn out during wedding planning, so long as you work your plan! Remember that you are planning a celebration of your love, but don't forget to take time to have fun along the way!

This post may be a bit corny (pun intended!), but I hope it gave you a different perspective on your wedding plans!

Saying "thank you"

Just imagine - your wedding day went perfectly, and your honeymoon was a very welcome retreat for you and your new husband. Two blissful weeks on an island, with nothing and no one to bother you except for the wait staff asking if you want a refill. Life is great!

Now you're back home, trying to get adjusted to your new life as a married couple. One of the first things that should be on your to do list is to write thank you notes to everyone who came to your wedding and/or sent you a gift. Also, every vendor who made your wedding so special would certainly appreciate hearing from you. I know that writing thank you's can be tedious, but it's as necessary as buying your wedding gown!

The best way that I've found to get this task done is to make a list of every gift you received and who gave it to you, together with your guest list that contains everyone's address. Make 1 copy of each list and then divide the list between you and your spouse. Then, start writing your thank yous!

A good thank you note doesn't have to be long. Three sentences should be more than enough! Start out by thanking the person/couple for coming to your wedding and for giving you such a generous gift. (NOTE: ALL gifts are generous in a thank you card!) The next sentence should let the person/couple know how you intend on using their gift. And then, the final sentence should thank them again, and tell them that you hope to see them soon. That's basically it!

Just one thing to keep in mind. Thank you notes should be handwritten and personalized to each person. It's just tacky to have your photographer make you up thank you cards with a verse pre-printed! Worse yet, to have your names pre-printed too! Either inserting a wallet-sized photo or having your photographer print up your photograph on the outside of the card - these are GREAT! But, please, don't take the easy way out when doing your thank yous! With all the special touches you included in your wedding, you don't want to lower the bar now!

Picking a theme

One of the first things to be decided upon, once you have secured your wedding venue(s), if the "theme" of the wedding. Sometimes, even, this decision is made prior to finding the venue(s), as the theme may dictate what locations you look at. So, the "theme" of your wedding is integral to how you proceed throughout your planning process.

Now, what exactly constitutes a "theme"? Well, it can be very simple -- the colors of your wedding. The theme can be the color scheme; the color of the bridesmaid dresses, the basic flower colors, linen choices, etc.

Sometimes, the "theme" is more elaborate, however. Getting married on the beach? Consider carrying the nautical theme throughout - including your save-the-dates, invitations, bridal party attire, menu cards, linens, centerpieces. Are you having your wedding in a garden setting? The theme can evolve into a Garden Tea Party. Are you just in love with roses? Your theme could be just that - roses - where the invitations are in the shape of a rose, your bridesmaids wear rose colored dresses, and your centerpieces are bowls of water with floating roses.

To start, you want to choose 2-3 colors that you will use throughout your wedding. More than that, and the feel may be more frenetic than you want. Once that's decided upon, then you can see if you want to go farther and incorporate a monogram or a motif that can be repeated on all the paper used for the wedding as well as possibly used in the favors, escort cards, etc. The sky's the limit for your creativity!

"Substitute Planner"

This weekend, I was asked to take over a wedding and be the wedding planner by another planner who had a family emergency come up. I received the request on Thursday night, followed by an email of the wedding day timeline and a conversation with the bride and groom on Friday morning. Under the circumstances, the bride and groom were very understanding and spent some precious time with me going over the fine details of their plans. I also spoke with all of the vendors and confirmed last minute issues. Then, Friday night I attended the rehearsal and Saturday was their wonderful, beautiful wedding.

I have to admit, it was rather difficult stepping in at the last minute and trying to grasp everything that needed to be accomplished in such a sort time frame. It was rewarding, as well, when the bride and groom entrusted me with their details and I made sure they came to life. The newlyweds were able to relax during their celebration and enjoy their day - leaving all the logistical issues to me. And their thank you's at the end of the night let me know that they truly appreciated their "substitute planner."

It certainly was flattering to be contacted by another planner to take over and represent her during this wedding celebration. Being recognized by another, highly respected, professional in my field and having her trust me to carry out her plans was gratifying.

This experience, however, certainly pointed out some important issues that you need to keep in mind when you're planning your own wedding. Of utmost importance, you should ask your wedding planner about her back-up should something unforeseen occur. My backups are other wedding planners that I know through the Association of Bridal Consultants -- and my assistant for the wedding. I always work with an assistant, someone who is learning about how to become a wedding planner, and that person is well-versed on the wedding beginning about 1 month prior. So, having a more experienced planner coupled with my assistant - or even my assistant becoming the lead on the wedding day - means that each one of my clients is well cared for on their special day should something happen to me.

Favors

One question that most of my couples grapple with concerns favors. What is a good favor? Should it be one per couple or one per guest? Should a favor even be given at all?

The history behind favors goes back centuries. Since a wedding was considered a lucky occasion, the happy couple shared their luck and appreciation of their guests by way of small gifts of candies, representing fertility, health, wealth, happiness and longevity.

Today, favors come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some couples choose to make a donation to a favorite charity in their guests' names (which, by the way, is tax deductible) and give out the organization's bracelets as their favors. Some couples choose a favor that comports with their wedding's theme or a favorite activity. Others forego this tradition, preferring to spend the money elsewhere in the celebration.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to your decision regarding favors. Frankly, I always recommend a donation or something edible, so that the guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Mini-bottles of wine, chocolates, cookies all make wonderful favors - their packaging can also be part of the favor! A lovely cookie placed in a hand-painted box that goes with your theme is always appreciated!

The question of whether to give one favor per guest or per couple is usually determined based upon your budget. Believe it or not, favors often cost $5 or more per piece. No one will be upset if you give out mini bottles of wine to each couple - they will simply toast to your new life together!

Timing

They say that timing is everything. Timing is when you meet your future spouse. Timing is when you find your first house. Timing is when you ... well, you get the picture!

In wedding planning, timing is one of the first details that you'll face. The overall timing picture - will you get married in the summer or fall, winter or spring? Once you make that decision, it's on to deciding which particular month will be the best for you. Then, you get more specific - on which day of the week do you want to celebrate with your family and friends. Next you zero in on the actual date - let's say, Saturday, August 9, 2008 (which just happens to be my 10 year anniversary!).

Now, you may think you're home free with the timing thing once you've picked your exact date, right? Well, not exactly. You now move onto deciding when, exactly, on your date that you will be married and when your reception will be held. Now, this can be tricky. You don't want to have too long of a time in between ceremony and reception or your guests will get bored, lost, or worse yet - will simply skip the ceremony! However, you don't want to have too short of an in-between time or else you and your new spouse (and bridal party) won't be able to enjoy the cocktail hour because you'll be getting your photos taken -- not to mention a rushed break-down and set-up time for your vendors! I hope I've given you some food for thought to make the timing of your wedding just right!

Security

This post is going to deal with a topic on which I've just received a crash course: security. Like insurance, security may be a "necessary evil" depending upon where you choose to have your wedding, or some of the players in it.

Let me tell you what happened this week: I had a client meeting at their wedding venue in Newark at 7:30 pm. I parked in a lot - albeit an open-air lot that I knew would not be attended upon my return. However, I bargained that parking in the lot was a better alternative to simply parking on the street. Well...when I returned to my car around 9:30 pm, I found my passenger side window smashed and my GPS unit stolen. No fun!

I spoke with my clients about this, and we are going to take extra security precautions at their wedding. Although there is a valet service provided, we are going to look into hiring security guards to patrol the parking lot during the wedding, just so that the guests (and me!) will feel extra safe.

This is just one example of how security may be advisable for a wedding. Think about where you are going to be celebrating your big day - could people enter your room without being noticed and grab something off the gift table? Do you have an ex who may want to intrude on your reception and make a scene? Now, my purpose here is NOT to scare you, but rather to make you think about a topic that you may have overlooked in your planning. So, I hope it gives you food for thought!

Budgeting, part 2

Back to the realities of weddings -- if only lace and tulle were free! Every one of my clients has a budget; some may be larger than others, but no one doesn't have a total amount in mind to spend on their wedding. While Eva Longoria & Tony Parker, and Tom & Katie, may have spent over 2 million on their weddings, they still had budgets to stick to and, if we could ask them, probably had wanted more of something but decided against it because it was outside of their budgets!

So how to get the most bang for your wedding buck, so to speak? First, look to yourselves. What's important to you? Are you foodies - then spend a bit more on the reception site. Are you dance-a-holics - then invest in a superior band. Did you go to FIT - then your gown may be your splurge. Spend a bit more on your passion, but keep in mind that not everything can be your passion!

Another way to stretch your dollar is to make a statement - instead of having little centerpieces on every table, have 1 major one in the center of the room. Or have things do double duty, such as decorations in the church being moved to the reception room.

The best budget idea: hire a wedding planner! While it's true I, as a wedding planner, charge my clients a flat fee, it's also true that I can save my clients money. Sometimes I save them a lot of money by knowing the industry and certain tricks of the trade. I do not accept referral fees from vendors, and ask that the commission be given directly to my couples, so they see their savings directly. Other times the savings is by ideas. I try to recommend less expensive alternatives to achieve the same look and feel for the wedding. For example, if my client wants a very expensive designer gown, I can recommend a seamstress that can create a similar dress for much less money.

But the truth is, you are the ones responsible for your budget! My job is to recommend budget-friendly vendors and to remind you of your expenses - and to offer choices. Your job is to love each other, remember that your wedding day is a celebration of your love, and to share your happiness with your family and friends in a fiscally responsible way. As a wedding consultant, I'm not here to spend your money (although I certainly can do that!) but rather I'm here to assist you along your wedding journey in as happy and stress-free manner as possible.

Budget-Busters

I've been doing a lot of weddings this season, and one constant -- no matter the size of the budget -- is the concern about money and expenses that seems to grow exponentially as the wedding day draws nearer. Given the amount of money being spent for the wedding, I can totally understand my clients' concerns; the average wedding in my neck of the woods is about $40,000. However, budgeting from the beginning, and being disciplined enough to stick to the budget, is the key to relieving this sort of stress at the 11th hour.

As soon as a client hires me for full-service assistance, I give them a survey that I've created over the years. This survey asks all sorts of questions, from the general (how much do you have to spend on your wedding?) to the specific (do you want disposable cameras at your wedding?). This survey helps me create what I've deemed an "engagement blueprint." Based on their answers, I develop a budget that breaks down the overall amount into each vendor category. That way, when I recommend vendors, I only recommend those that fit within their budgetary parameters. And, every month, I send out an email that includes an updated budget based upon actual, contracted amounts.

That said, clients still go over-budget. Why, you ask? Human nature!! Really, when a client goes and meets with a band, for example, I remind them of their budget for music for everything (ceremony, cocktail hour and reception). The entertainment company also asks for this figure so they only show the bands that fit within their budget. But, of course, they are salespeople and they show the 8-piece band that is totally fantastic and fits right in their budget. The next thing, though, is they show the same band with an extra percussionist, horn section and singer, making it a 12-piece band -- the couple falls in love with them and hires them, knowing they are over their budget but figuring they will "make it up" with another vendor. But they never do!

So, my advice is to figure out how much you have to spend on your wedding from all sources -- parents, grandparents, your own savings, etc. Take that total number and divide it among all of the vendors that will be involved in your wedding, leaving a line for "misc." and another one for "tips." Then, try your hardest to stick within each line item!!! As time goes on, it gets more difficult to "make up" any overages and then you find yourself stressing about money the day before you walk down the aisle. I'll write more about this topic next time.

Bride Ideas Turns 5!

It's so hard for me to believe that Bride Ideas is now in its 5th year of helping engaged couples on their way to being married!

Back in 2002, I was working full-time as an attorney in a large NJ law firm in its civil litigation department. I was not happy with my job - stressed all of the time and not feeling any fulfillment even when my client won and, with my help, actually was paid $2 million. I just didn't get any satisfaction out of my job. So, I returned to the exploration of wedding planning as an alternate career. I had started this research a few years before when I was getting married in 1998, but at that time, we were just buying a house and I had only been practicing law for 4 years in NYC. Fast-forward to 2002 and the time seemed right to make the move!

I created Bride Ideas in July of 2002 and began taking a correspondence course from the Association of Bridal Consultants. I attended a couple of one-day seminars and in November attended the 3-day national conference for the Association of Bridal Consultants which was held in Phoenix that year. I did all of this while maintaining my full-time position as an attorney and billing the required 180 hours a month. When it came time for me to start working with my first bride, I was very lucky - she was another attorney at my firm who agreed to keep my secret while I helped her plan her wedding!

Since then, I "went public" at the law firm - and went to part-time status for a while before finally leaving altogether in 2004. Believe me, I never looked back! I find helping you, guiding you, recommending new ideas to you, all the while being creative yet very detail oriented to be my calling. I feel like a million bucks when my brides walk down the aisle (on time!), looking absolutely radiant, knowing that the only thing she has to remember is to say "I do!"

So, looking back on the first 5 years of Bride Ideas is fun - especially since I can see how far I've come. But I'm more excited looking ahead to all of the new and wonderful people that I will meet and assist along their wedding journey! Like you!

What to Expect at Your Initial Meeting with Bride Ideas

I'm so happy to meet you! During our initial meeting, we'll discuss a variety of things -- your hopes and dreams for your wedding, where you are in your wedding planning process, even how you met! I try to ask questions that allow me to begin to get to know both of you, and your preferences for your big day. Do you want a band or a DJ? Have you thought about a color scheme? Believe me, there are no right or wrong answers to my questions - even "I don't know" is perfectly right! I treat this initial meeting as a "getting acquainted" session.

And while I'm getting to know you both, you are getting to know me as well. I'll admit it right here in print: I'm a terrible, horrible saleswoman! I don't try to do the hard sell, because I hate that done to me. I don't try to scare you into thinking you can't live without me for the next year while planning your wedding. Pretty much what you see is what you'll get from me during your engagement period. I'm pretty low key with a good sense of humor. I try to give you all the options and then let you choose how you want to go. I'm not the Wedding Police, but I do let you know the "proper" way to do things - then let you decide whether to ignore etiquette's rules. During this meeting, I'll also go over the packages that I've developed over the years and give you all the options to create your own custom package of services from me.

I love meeting with prospective clients - because I know that, hopefully, we'll soon begin planning your wedding and I'll get to know another wonderful couple embarking upon the most exciting journey of their lifetime. I feel that I can offer a stress-free planning and wedding (well, as stress-free as possible!), and I truly want to share my knowledge with you. So, when we meet and I say that I'm happy to meet you, I hope that you know I'm being sincere!

NY Times article about wedding planners

A week ago on Sunday, the NY Times ran an article about wedding planners. It starts: "Saying 'I do' to a wedding planner can be the second most important vow a newly engaged couple makes." The article goes on to describe the good and the bad about wedding planners -- how some planners truly assist the engaged couple, while others hinder the process. The focus of the article leaned toward the latter, as that's more "newsworthy"; however, I totally agree with what the article said.

One couple hired and fired 2 wedding planners, calling them "planzillas." (This couple eventually successfully used a 3rd planner for their wedding.) One issue this couple pointed out was the fee for one of the planners was a percentage of the total wedding budget; the couple felt that as their budget went up, so did the planner's fee, and there was no incentive to keep costs under control. This is true - I have struggled with my fee structure (and continue to do so!) over the years, but I have always maintained that a flat fee is the most appropriate way to go, for just this very reason. Another couple in the article complained about their planner's lack of accessibility and that her ideas were all about the planner rather than the couple. I believe this goes to the professionalism of the planner, and her training and passion for the industry. When you truly love what you do, you want to be there for your clients - to guide them through the wedding planning process and bring out their ideas, which may be 180 degrees different from your own!

The article also pointed to a sad fact in the wedding planning industry - Marcy Blum, a NY planner, was quoted as saying "a lot of wedding planners are entering the field with no training, so buyer beware." I could not agree more! I've heard many a bride say that she is ready to be a wedding planner to others with nothing more than her own wedding as experience! Wedding consulting should not be considered a "hobby" or "side job." As a wedding professional, I take my full-time job very seriously. I have taken many courses through the Association of Bridal Consultants and other organizations, and built an extensive vendor network over the past 5 years. My company is run as a small business, with all the legal, insurance and tax implications that brings. When you are looking for a wedding consultant to guide and assist you, don't be penny wise but dollar foolish! This is only the most important day in your life thus far -- hire a true professional to make your dreams come true!

A New Look for Bride Ideas

I'm so excited to share with you all the new things that have been going on here at Bride Ideas over the past few months. Behind the scenes, I've been working really hard to update the look of Bride Ideas' logo and website. Launching tomorrow (hopefully!), you'll see my updated Bride Ideas website, featuring my new logo, new colors, new content -- a whole new Bride Ideas!

The reason behind this major change is that I've been told over and over that I provide my clients with fun, hip, happening advice and ideas. However, my previous logo and website simply didn't convey the truth about my services - so it was time to update!

Plus, I'd had Bride Ideas' website up for about 5 years, with just minor tweaks to it. It's really amazing at how far technology has come in this short time frame; "cutting edge" design 5 years ago is now considered "old" or "passe"! So, I asked my web designer to conform my site to my new logo AND to design a brand new site. Keep your eyes peeled for my new site, www.rhondaweddings.com to be launched sometime in early fall!!

I hope you enjoy the new look of Bride Ideas' site. I'll keep you up to date on all of the changes over here, but always know there will be no change in the high quality of service I provide!

What to discuss with your Church

Many of my clients choose to be married in their house of worship - a place they (or at least the bride) have been attending for several years. Other clients decide they want to be married in a church, even though they are not members. Either way, there are some very important issues to keep in mind if you're getting married in a church.

Usually, a church will have rules governing most every aspect of your wedding ceremony. Most notably, photographers and videographers will be regulated in some form. I've worked at churches that do not allow any photography at all during a ceremony, and other churches that simply limit where a photographer/videographer can stand. You must ask your church secretary/administrator about the rules and pass them along to the appropriate people.

Other church-related issues to keep in mind are decorations. Where can the florist decorate and when will the florist be allowed into the sanctuary to set up? These two very important questions need to be answered before talking with your florist - imagine paying for several large flower-laden arches to go across and up the aisle, only to find out at the last moment that the florist can only gain access to the church 1/2 hour before the ceremony begins!

The church may or may not provide an organist and/or soloist/cantor, so that's also a question you need to ask up front. There may be rules against your guests throwing birdseed, rice and even rose petals. Most churches do not provide programs for your ceremony, so if you want your guests to have this memento, you will need to provide it. Finally, make sure to ask your church if there are any musical restrictions - you don't want to be surprised to learn the day before your wedding that you can't use "Here Comes The Bride" as your processional! If you use all of these tips, your church ceremony will go off without a hitch!

Mr. Whiskers goes to the vet

OK, I'm admittedly going off-topic today. You see, my black-and-white 5-year old cat, Mr. Whiskers, has been taking up some of my time lately. We recently took him to our vet, and he told us that, among other things, Mr. Whiskers has severe gingivitis. The vet recommended that he pull 4-5 teeth as a result. The surgery was scheduled, but I wasn't feeling all that good about having so many teeth pulled from such a young cat. So, we took him for a second opinion.

To make a long story short, the 2nd vet agreed about the severity of the gingivitis but didn't feel that any teeth should be taken out since the teeth are not loose and Mr. Whiskers didn't appear to be in any pain. This second vet said that gingivitis may be caused by a type of bacteria and she drew a blood sample to check. On Friday, we got the results -- sure enough, he has the bacteria and soon will be on an antibiotic regimen to take care of the problem! Amazing that poor Mr. Whiskers could have lost 5 teeth when all he really needed was an antibiotic!

Now, I'm not sure how this story ties in with wedding planning. All I can say is that if someone recommends something that you don't feel is 100% what you want to do or how you feel a situation should be handled, stop and think. Perhaps seek other counsel. Who knows, after weighing all the options, you may end up with a totally unexpected, but much better, outcome!

Working with your wedding planner

Congratulations! You're engaged to your soul mate AND you've hired a wedding consultant to help you navigate the wedding-planning maze. You've just taken 2 huge steps toward becoming part of a married couple!

Now what? It's time to create a plan that will include all of the things that have to be accomplished before your big day. Just as with your relationship with your future spouse, working with your wedding planner requires open lines of communication. If you have visions of purple dancing in your head, tell your planner! If you don't want to even get a sniff of a rose on your wedding day, tell your planner! If you want some members of your wedding party to sing a song during your wedding ceremony, tell your planner! If you ran off to Vegas and got married there - but still want to have another ceremony and reception at home to share with your family and friends, tell your planner!

Why am I urging you to tell your planner every minute detail -- even ones that you feel are "small" or "not worthy of telling your consultant"? Because every detail fits into the overall plan of your wedding, and may impact upon other plans without your even considering it. For example, if you want special friends to sing a song during your ceremony, special arrangements may need to be made with the ceremony musicians to set up a run through (which may mean there could be an extra charge for the musicians to do this), the officiant may need to approve the song/singers, not to mention the program should include their names and the song they are singing. Try to tell everything to your planner as the ideas come to you or, at least, are being discussed and look likely -- this way all the corresponding details can be ironed out weeks or months before your wedding.

Wedding consultants are not magicians nor mind readers, no matter how much we covet those titles! Keeping the lines of communication open -- this goes both ways, your planner should be in constant touch with you as well! -- is a key ingredient to having the wedding of your dreams.

Block-booking hotel rooms

One of the many questions I'm asked by my clients is about reserving rooms for their wedding guests. As soon as you decide upon the location of your ceremony and reception site(s), you can start this relatively simple process.

Step #1 -- Choose at least 2 different hotels that are close by. I recommend that you select 1 higher-end and one moderately-priced hotel, to accommodate your guests' varying budgets.

Step #2 -- Visit both hotels to make sure they are up to your standards. Check out the lobby, restaurants, amenities, and ask to see a standard room.

Step #3 -- Once you're confident that your selections are a good fit, ask to speak with the Group Sales Manager (or some such title). That person will walk you through the process to reserve a block of rooms, at a discounted rate for your guests. You may or may not be required to sign a contract for the block; if you do have to sign one, make sure to read it carefully to make sure you are not liable for any fees, including indemnification provisions!

Step #4 -- Tell your guests!! Either in your save-the-date information, by email, on your wedding website or in your invitations, let your guests know that you have block-booked rooms for them. Tell them the telephone number they must call and under what name they must reference in order to get the discounted rate. Don't forget to let them know the deadline - most hotels release the block back into the main reservation system about 1 month before your wedding date!

Keep in mind that some hotels will give you a free room (or even suite) if your block is filled. (Most room blocks are for 20 rooms.) Of course, your wedding consultant can help you out with all of these steps - usually taking over all of the legwork!

Of birthdays and parties

Well, allow me to go slightly off-topic today and talk about my weekend - which did not include any wedding-related activities. In fact, I didn't even turn on my computer the whole weekend! You see, it was my birthday on Friday and I celebrated all weekend long. On Friday, my husband Mike took me out to see Spiderman 3 and then we went to a club with a bunch of friends from our dojo (where we both practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). Saturday, we had a big party at our house - some friends who live in Virginia and Maryland stayed over. After a fun brunch, they left and my husband and I drove to my Mom's and went out to dinner with them. Boy, am I tired!!

Sometimes, though, you just have to stop and enjoy your friends and family - rather than only planning for the future! (You knew I'd have to tie this post into wedding planning somehow, right?!) I had so much fun with my long-time friends, some of whom I've known since the 3rd grade. There also were surprises, like when my BJJ sensei stopped by with some of his friends, including Rigan Machado (8th degree black belt and world champion). Not to mention Mike's beautiful present of a charm bracelet. It was a wonderful weekend!

As a wedding planner, I am constantly planning, making lists, attending meetings and offering advice. It's so easy to get wrapped up in thinking about your wedding day, planning for it and dreaming of it, that you miss all the little things going on around you. So, in this Spring, pick a day and just enjoy all that nature has to offer. Turn off your cell, leave your computer behind, and have fun. You'll be all the more recharged come Monday, and have great memories that make you smile!

Reality Check

Over the past few years, we have become inundated with reality TV. From The Amazing Race to Survivor and The Apprentice, reality TV is a big industry now -- affording networks relatively low budget shows that can mean ratings success. Just ask Fox - with its goldmine of American Idol.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love watching some of these shows. Our TV is regularly tuned to American Idol, and I get a guilty pleasure from watching The Bachelor! But there also are many wedding-related reality shows that I'm sure you're glued to: Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? started the trend, that is now being followed by Bridezillas, The Real Wedding Crashers, Real Weddings, A Wedding Story...the list goes on and on.

When I watch reality wedding shows, I do so with a critical eye. And so should you! Some of these makeover shows that promise a million-dollar wedding on a $5000 budget - and the wedding looks amazing! - are simply scary to me. What you don't see, or are not informed of, is that the shoestring budget is supplemented by donated gifts and labor. In order for the budget to stay so low, vendors simply give things to the couple. In real life, "giveaways" do happen, but on a much smaller scale. If you tried to go out and duplicate some of the "low budget" weddings shown on TV, I suspect that the real life budget would be at least 4 times the amount anticipated. So, please keep watching reality shows for their ideas and for inspiration, but remember, it's a TV show!

Class over!

I just finished teaching a course at the Montclair Adult School, titled "The Art of Planning Exceptional Events." I had 13 students in my class and, over the 4-week session, we covered all sorts of topics related to event and wedding planning. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and started (or continued) their education into this exciting field.

In teaching this course, I learned a lot as well. I was forced to "break down" the many different areas involved in planning so that I could explain them to the class. In so doing, I was reminded why certain steps have to be taken first, rather than just jumping into the whole planning process at once. While my students gained an introductory education into planning, I also gained a deeper understanding of the "art" as well as the "science" of planning major milestones. And, I believe, I became a better wedding planner by being forced to think through all of the steps and details!

Of course, seeking education is important. For those just starting in the wedding planning industry, the best thing to do is take courses and learn how to run your business. For those of us who have been doing planning for a while, taking courses is equally important because you always are learning!

The Purrfect Day

I'm going to go slightly off wedding-topic today and write about something else that's near and dear to my heart: my 3 cats. Yesterday was Nutmeg & Phantom's 4th birthdays (they are litter mates). Mr. Whiskers' birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks; he'll also be 4. These 3 cats really give me and my husband a run for our money -- always trying to get into places they know they're not supposed to go, hiding when they know we want them to come out, playing shy around our friends. But they are great companions, sitting on our laps and purring at the end of a hard day. And boy can they sleep!

We were very fortunate because we - luckily - hadn't fed the cats with the tainted pet food that's been in all the headlines lately. Of course, our cats didn't even know of the health scare and have continued on their merry, mischievous ways. In fact, Mr. Whiskers is literally lying across my arms as I try to type this blog!

But I think we can learn a lot from our pets. Speaking on behalf of my 3 cats, they are most contented when they are around the people that they love, and who love them back. They are not afraid to show affection, and be playful. They don't worry about what can go wrong, but rather fully enjoy what is right, in the moment. So, take a cue from 3 cats in New Jersey, and appreciate what's going right in your lives, leaving for another hour the hassles with the reception site, caterer or musician! After all, there's no need "to save up all the fun" for your wedding day -- go out and enjoy just being with your fiance right now!
